Frequently asked questions
What is a solar rooftop system?
A solar rooftop system is a combination of components that convert sunlight into usable electricity. It includes:
- Solar panels with PV cells
- Solar inverter
- Panel mounting structures
- AC and DC cables
- AC and DC combiner boxes
- Earthing cables
- MC4 connectors
How does a solar rooftop system work?
It works on the photovoltaic effect. When sunlight falls on the PV cells in a solar panel, it is converted into DC electricity. The inverter converts this DC power into usable AC power.
The AC power is fed through a bi-directional (net) meter that supplies your building, exports excess power to the DISCOM (grid) and imports power from the grid when solar generation is not enough.
Are there any subsidies from the government?
There is no subsidy for commercial entities. For residential rooftop solar, the central government gives a subsidy under PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, credited directly to your bank account:
| Segment | System size | Subsidy |
|---|---|---|
| Individual house | 1 – 2 kW | ₹30,000 – ₹60,000 |
| Individual house | 2 – 3 kW | ₹60,000 – ₹78,000 |
| Individual house | Above 3 kW | ₹78,000 |
| Group housing societies / RWAs | Common facilities | ₹18,000 per kW |
How do I apply for the rooftop solar subsidy?
Under the DBT scheme the process is simple — and we handle it for you:
- Register on the National Portal with your electricity consumer number.
- Apply for rooftop solar; a DISCOM official checks technical feasibility.
- After approval, choose SunOcean as your installation company.
- Finalise the design with us and sign the agreement.
- We install the system and apply for the net meter on your behalf.
- After inspection you receive the commissioning certificate.
- Submit your bank details and a cancelled cheque on the portal — the subsidy is credited within about 30 days.
